DO DRUMS HAVE A PLACE IN LITURGICAL MUSIC?

When it comes to liturgical music, the use of drums can be a contentious issue. Some argue that drums have no place in the solemnity and reverence of the liturgy, while others believe that they can add a powerful and uplifting element to worship.

On one hand, those opposed to the use of drums in liturgical music argue that it can be distracting and inappropriate. They believe that the use of percussion instruments can take away from the sacredness of the liturgy and can be seen as a performance rather than an act of worship. They also argue that the loud and energetic sound of drums can be jarring and disruptive to the peaceful atmosphere of the liturgy.

On the other hand, those in favor of the use of drums argue that they can add a dynamic and celebratory element to liturgical music. They point to the long history of percussion instruments in religious and cultural music traditions around the world. Drums can be used to create a sense of rhythm and energy that can inspire and engage worshipers. They also argue that the use of drums can be done in a tasteful and reverent way, in keeping with the solemnity of the liturgy.

Ultimately, the use of drums in liturgical music is a matter of personal preference and cultural tradition. It is up to individual churches and liturgical leaders to determine what is appropriate and respectful for their particular worship context. Some churches may choose to embrace the use of drums in their liturgical music, while others may choose to stick with more traditional instrumentation. Regardless of the decision, the most important thing is to ensure that the music is in service of the liturgy and the worship of God.

  1. Trish Stapleton says:

Like any instrument played with skill, sensitivity and understanding of music ministry it is very appropriate. We have used them for all the High Feast and Special occasions. Practice with the music group is critical in order to serve the People of God in Liturgical celebrations. Don’t forget drums are also central part of some culture’s ritual and need to be included also.
